The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) traces its inception to Operation Tabarin – a Second World War military operation, thence becoming the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) and then BAS. Early days focussed on surveying and some geology, changing focus to environmental matters, meteorology, glaciology and geophysics. In the early 70s, I spent two years down south as a meteorological observer and base commander. Hence I will give a personal view of those times as a FID
