visit to pendon

On 8th July 2024, a group of members visited Pendon Museum in Long Wittenham, near Wallingford. With the museum closed to the public, we had exclusive access, allowing everyone an unobstructed view of the three layouts: the fictional Madder Valley, Dartmoor, and the Vale of the White Horse. The detailed models of buildings, some of which still exist in the Vale, were truly impressive.

The Dartmoor and Vale layouts, set in the 1930s, offer a precise depiction of the social history of that era. The visit left a lasting impression on everyone, and a few members even signed up as “Friends of Pendon,” granting them unrestricted access to the museum throughout the year.

If you have never been to Pendon, we highly recommend a visit. You don’t need to be a train enthusiast to appreciate the exhibits, as the trains are just one part of the larger story. The museum is open on weekends from 11 AM to 4 PM, with guides and audio guides available to enhance your experience.
